Markree Castle

Welcome to Markree

Markree was previously the home of the Cooper family for over 370 years and that history and connection with a bygone era can be felt in every corner of the castle.

Beyond the history and the sheer beauty of this romantic castle’s spacious interiors, towers and turrets, is an award-winning team renowned internationally for their distinctive service, style and care. Welcome to Markree Castle, a 15th Century authentic Irish castle located in beautiful County Sligo on the route of the world-famous Wild Atlantic Way.

Relax and enjoy all it has to offer; it is a place to be inspired, to reflect, to recharge and reconnect. One of the largest privately-owned castles in Ireland, Markree Castle stands on a secluded 500-acre estate in the scenic north-west of Ireland. Extensive renovations were completed in 2017, allowing this Gothic masterpiece to reclaim its position as one of the finest historic castles and wedding venues in the land.

Your Castle Wedding

On arrival, you are instantly transported back in time. Where guests would once disembark their carriages under a ‘port la coeur’ designed for shelter, the bride and groom now disembark their wedding car!

Inside, an impressive staircase leads to the Grand Hall. The staircase is exquisite and marks the beginning of your newly-wed journey into the castle’s Gothic architecture, with vaulted ceilings, striking arches and handcrafted cornicing.

Your drinks reception will be served amid the rich décor of the Grand Hall, with warming period colours of rich reds and strong blues. Natural daylight diffuses the room through antique artwork on the stained-glass window and sky-lit ceiling.

As this is your private wedding venue, you and your guests can roam the gardens and enjoy the antique furnished reception rooms. The Observatory is a particular favourite, with beautiful views of the River Unshin.

The castle lends itself to stunning wedding photography indoors, if the weather is unkind. Outside, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to memorable photography locations - rose gardens, the River Unshin, a boathouse and woodland walks await you.

Our chefs at Markree Castle have a passion for bringing local quality produce from its source to our table. Their inspiration is reflected in the quality of our ingredients and innovative menus.

Your gourmet 5-course dinner is served in the Grand Golden Ballroom, with its world-famous Roccoco style plasterwork, which can seat up to 150 guests.

The quality of our produce is a top priority and wild fallow venison from the estate is a seasonal treat, as is our own lamb and produce from the castle garden.

Call in, or contact us, to arrange a private viewing of Markree Castle, one of the finest wedding castles in Ireland.
